MINUTES

MAY 18, 2016

 

The Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild met at the Adair County Annex, Kirksville, on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. President Di Zook called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m.

May birthdays were recognized by President Di, and 32 members answered Roll Call. The April minutes were approved as sent out. Everyone received the minutes this month, so it is hoped all the “quirks” are now worked out.

Treasurer Joan Harrison reported expenses of $160.48 and a balance of $4,639.33,00, of which $146.14 are Restricted Funds for Community Service.

OLD BUSINESS: None.

NEW BUSINESS: None.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Quilt Show Committee: Barb Bevell, Alice Allinson, Andrea O’Brien, Rose Marie Smith, Mary Magruder.

  • A total of 153 quilts have been entered in the 2016 Quilt Show. The show will be at William Matthews Middle School on June 3 & 4, 2016. Hours on Friday, June 3, are 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 4, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
  • Vendor Committee: There will be twelve (12) vendors, two (2) demonstration tables with both sewing machines and handwork. The suggested donation at the door is $3.00, raffle quilt, and Shelly Pagliai will be there to sign her new book. Shelly and all vendors will be “showcased” in a Vendor Spotlight. Four (4) vendors will be spotlighted for a short time every two (2) hours
  • Bed Turning Committee: There will be two on Friday and 3 on Saturday. Quilts needed for the Bed Turning include: Flowers, Americana, Quilts of Valor, Stars, Ballet/dance, Tennis, Psychadelic, and Elvis.
  • Raffle Quilt Committee: The Raffle Quilt: will be on display with tickets for sale. There will be various demonstrations. Rosemarie Smith will demo machine piecing.
    • Raffle Quilt ticket packets were distributed by Pat Kurtzeman and she has extra tickets as well. IT IS IMPOSRTANT TO SELL AS MANY TICKETS AS POSSIBLE!!!
  • Publicity: Erin Northcutt distributed fliers to the members and requested they be placed in various businesses, etc. A sheet was circulated as to where members planned to place the fliers. Fliers have also been mailed to all the Quilt Shops. The Kirksville Chamber of Commerce will send out approximately 75 fliers about the Quilt Show. Kim Sampson & Maria Bradshaw will put up the large signs on June 3.
  • The Set-Up & Take-Down Committee needs two (2) more persons to assist. (One member who had signed up has been diagnosed with cancer & may need treatments and be unable to do this and the other person is her daughter.) Di Zook and Pat Kurtzeman volunteered to help put up and take down.
    • Di Zook will provide a flat-bed trailer for the 20’ boards to be delivered by Jepson Lumber. They will be at the storage unit at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, June 3. Marsha Yahl has a family wedding rehearsal that day and a wedding on Saturday, so she may be able to bring things from the storage unit, but not return them.
  • Awards & Ribbons Committee: Meredith Willcox displayed the completed ribbons. They were made from tie-dye fabric donated by Andrea O’Brien and going along with our theme, “Piece and Love.”   The ribbons looked GREAT!
  • Kitchen Committee: Diane Bloskovich announced we will have the Home Economics room and lunch is supplied on Saturday for the vendors and Guild members. NO FOOD IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM!!! They do allow SEALABLE water bottles in the gym.
    • Meredith Willcox suggested that we invite all the people who helped with set-up, take- down, etc. to have lunch with us on Saturday. In the past, we have invited them to a carry-in at our regular June meeting . After discussion, Meredith Willcox made a motion to invite those who assist with the quilt show. to join us for lunch in the Home Economics room on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Bonnie Schultz seconded the motion and it carried.
  • “Days For Girls” will have one hundred (100) kits packaged with necessary supplies on Friday evening. Sue Schneider, person in charge of this project, may also be there.
  • Check-In Committee: The Name Badges this year will be clear plastic pin-on type badges. The front of the badge will contain the name of the Exhibitors or Guild Members and the quilt or quilts exhibited by that person will be listed on the back. The “back” will serve as the receipt at the time of quilt pick-up, so there will be little chance of it being lost. It is hoped this will alleviate some confusion at the time of check in.
  • White Glove Committee: Elsie Gaber is in charge of the white gloves for those who want to touch the quilts. These gloves have been loaned to the Guild by the Methodist Church Bell Choir.

SHOW & TELL:

KIM SAMPSON:

  1. Red, white, and black bag.

GYLA ELMORE:

  1. “Rock Candy” table topper (black with many bright colors in the design);
  2. “Mystic Nightmares,” Bargello quilt in purple & teal colors

CELIA RIGGLE:

  1. “Kitty Cucumber”, made for their first great-grandbaby, a girl.

ALICE ALLINSON:

  1. “Wedding March.”

MARILYN PECK:

  1. “Tumbling Spools”

BONNIE SCHULTZ:

  1. Quilt pieced together for Melba Bowen from blocks pieced by Melba’s family members years ago;
  2. “Teddy Bear” quilt pieced from scraps.

APRIL HETTINGER:

  1. Play quilt for her son. It has a church, gas station, race track, house, school. etc. with streets to each one for his cars and there is a train track around the edges.

MARY SHOAF:

  1. Two quilts with sampler blocks, and another quilt.

BRENDA MOORE:

  1. Quilt made for her grandson. Blocks had fish on them and the quilting was in fish pattern.

ANDREA O’BRIEN:

  1. Several bags made from leftover blocks;
  2. Quilts for Tammy Kriegshauser completed with painted blocks made by the grandmother of Tammy’s husband.

JOAN HARRISON:

  1. Quilt using blocks made at Shelley Pagliai’s Retreat;
  2. Quilt made from a kit and in a “ribbon” weave;
  3. Quilt in purple and lavender.

KATHY EAST:

  1. A tell: A new great-granddaughter born May 16. Brynlee Hazel-Jean East weighed 7 lb. 7 oz., and was 20 ¼” long.

President Di Zook declared the meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m. and passed the president’s gavel to Andrea O’Brien, who has been elected President for 2016-2017.
