This is the Newsletter of the Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild of Kirksville, Missouri.

AUGUST 16, 2017

The Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild met Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Adair County Annex.  President Brenda Moore called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m.  Jamie Keller was introduced as a gust.  Roll call was answered by 33 members with “My favorite quilting/Sewing tool or gadget.”   Seam ripper and cutting mats were among the favorites.

The President announced the August birthdays and Treasurer Joan Harrison gave the Treasurer’s Report.  The Corporate Registration required each years and the cost of the Internet Blog have both been paid.

Barb Bevell circulated the UFO Challenge quilt book for updates.  September will be the end of the year for this feature and there will be a drawing for the prize—for each project completed, members will have their name put in the “pot” for the drawing.

In September, the sheet for the 2018 Quilt Show Committees will be circulated.  President Brenda again asked for a volunteer to store the two (2) large totes containing the historical scrapbooks.  Diane Bloskovich volunteered to do this—BLESS HER!  The group was asked if notifications were preferred via Facebook or email.  It was noted that the Hands of Friendship Blog is a “closed group” and it was felt email was a better way of communication.  There was a question as to possibly storing things digitally.  Currently, pictures are stored on a Google drive and everything could be stored that way.  This was deemed the “way to go” and Kathy East will continue to collect articles, etc. from the area papers.

A number of people liked the idea of bringing items they no longer wanted or used to meetings.  For a donation, they were then able to get items that appealed to them.  However, the problem has been that any items not taken at the meeting were left on the table instead of being taken home by the person who brought the items.  Diane Bloskovich volunteered to take home whatever is left this evening and these items will be saved until the 2018 Quilt Show when they will have a table with prices on those items that can be purchased by our members or anyone attending the show.  This was observed at a recent quilt show and seemed to be quite a success.

It was noted that “Grandma’s Attic” has a table to give away.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:  The Community Service bin and batting are in Celia Riggle’s basement.  Mats for the homeless are being made by churches in Macon.  You can help:  Please bring plastic bags (Wal-Mart, Prenger, Hy-Vee, Penney;s, Dollar General, etc.) for this purpose.

Completed “Challenge Quilts” (curved piecing) are to be brought in a brown paper bag (or bag that cannot be seen through) to the September meeting when they will be displayed and voted on by the attendees.   REMEMBER!  these quilts must be complete with quilting!  They will be displayed at the 2018 Quilt Show in the “Challenge Quilt” category.  NOTE:  If you have not finished your challenge quilt, you can complete it and still enter your quilt in the 2018 Quilt Show in that category.

QUILT ‘TIL YOU WILT:  Reminders were distributed of the planned dates:  September 9, 2017; October 7, 2017; March 10, 2018, and April 14, 2018.  The Annex will be open at 8:00 a.m. on those dates.

QUILT SHOW:  Diane Bloskovich and Carol Cunningham are beginning their plans.

PROGRAM:  The program was presented by Rose Marie Smith, Shelley Pagliai, and Barb Bevell on how they keep track of the quilts they have made, cost of materials (including store receipt), dates of start and finish, pictures of the front, back, and label, fabric swatches, pattern name, Notes-“don’t make it again,” etc.  Notebooks and composition books were used for this information.

For part of the program, members were encouraged to bring quilts they would like to have photographed. These were hung and pictures taken. Lots of closeup shots were taken to show off the quilting and the details.
