2016 October Program — Shelly Pagliai

Our very own, Shelly Pagliai, was our featured speaker for October. Her program was based on her recently published quilt book, “A Simple Life”. (To purchase the book or to find out some behind-the-scenes info, go to Shelly’s website.)simplelifecover

“The Life of Hazel Ilene,” is based on Shelly’s grandmother, Hazel. Hazel was born in 1936 and grew up in the Callao, Missouri, area. In 1950, she was given a Christmas gift of a little red diary. She began writing in it in 1951 and faithfully continued keeping the diary until the day she was married. Shelly has brought these stories and the history of the 1950’s to life through photos, recipes, diary excerpts, news clippings, and more.

Shelly designed a quilt, called “Hazel’s Diary,” img_5835and those designs were published in the Kansas City Star as the “Block of the Month” from January 2015 through December 2015. “Hazel’s Diary” was made to reflect the simple life and times of the 1950’s.  Each block, backed by the red “frame”, is reminiscent of a pretty little hankie, with its scalloped edges.

More of Shelly’s beautiful quilts are shown below.

HOF Guild Member Happenings

July and August were busy months for some of our guild members.

The Community Service Committee made two donations on July 20. Celia Riggle and Rose Marie Smith delivered 7 quilts to Lifeline Pregnancy Center and 10 quilts to Victim Support Services.

Pictured above, (left photo) Celia with a representative from Lifeline Pregnancy and (right photo) Celia, two representatives from Victim Support Services, and Rose Marie.

Thank you to the guild members who donated their time and talents in making a charity quilt, and thank you to Celia and Rose Marie who made the delivery possible.

On August 1, Shelly Pagliai gave a wonderful program at the Macon Historical Society. The well-attended event was thoroughly enjoyed by folks from all over. Shelly’s presentation highlighted the quilts and events from her new book, “A Simple Life“, based on her mother’s diary and life in the Macon and Bevier, Missouri areas in the 1950’s. Shelly shared lots of quilts from the book, along with the quilt that was featured in The Kansas City Star block-of-the-month program.

A group from the HOF guild traveled to Macon to hear her lecture. We are so proud of her and all that she has accomplished. Congratulations on your new book, “A Simple Life”.

2016 HOF Spring Retreat — Shelly Pagliai

We had a WONDERFUL and fun retreat featuring our own designer-extraordinaire, Shelly Pagliai. Shelly taught us how to construct the “Star Flower” block, gave us short-cuts to trimming half-square triangles, and showed us how she set the blocks on point.

Not to be out done, the Retreat Committee (Jo Conklin, Di Zook, and Bonnie Schultz) Retreat 3-2016 Committee.. Bonnie, Di, Jo kept us constantly laughing and having fun. Drawings every 15 minutes for prizes, snacks on the table, and a fantastic breakfast and lunch were just part of their plan. They also decorated the Annex with “Barn Blocks” that will be featured in the upcoming Hwy 36 Shop Challenge, starting in April.

A BIG thank you goes out to the committee and Shelly for a successful Spring Retreat!

Below are pictures taken throughout the day…
