January 2019 — Community Outreach

The Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild has recently begun to partner with the Kirksville Arts Association. This partnership will provide us with a closer working relationship with the KV Arts and allow more community exposure to what we do through quilt education. We currently meet in their temporary space on south Baltimore, in Kirksville.

This partnership was mentioned in the December MOSAIC News & Notes.

Also featured in the newsletter, was the “2nd Weekend of Quilting” class, co-taught by Alice Allinson and Andrea O’Brien, on October 6, 2018. Alice and Andi led twelve women through the proper cutting, pressing, and piecing techniques for the “Double Churn Dash” block, by Missouri Star Quilt Company.

Alice and Andi’s next “confident beginner” quilting class will be May 4, 2019 at the Arts Association Building. This will be geared toward the quilters from the October class, but also suitable for others who wish to learn about quilting.

This quilt can easily be completed in a weekend! All you need are two charm packs and 3&3/4 yards of coordinating yardage for the background.

The instructions include directions to make half square triangles from squares, so you can turn the charm packs into half square triangles in no times at all.

You may use 2 of the same charm packs, 2 different packs from your favorite designer, or go for the scrappy look and use any five-inch squares.

Class #2–Stripping in Paradise  *NOTE: Pattern is an additional $12 cost.

This pattern can easily go together in a weekend. Finished 66” square, it requires a jelly roll and some background yardage.

It used strip piecing with minimal seams to match. You can use any jelly roll, but your background fabric needs to contrast from your jelly roll.

You can view these patterns on her website:

Of course, If you are not interested in one or both of these classes, you may simply work on your own projects and still enjoy the company of your fellow retreaters! If you chose to work on your own, the cost for the day remains the same.

We hope you will join us for this fun, 2-day event!

2016 HOF Spring Retreat — Shelly Pagliai

We had a WONDERFUL and fun retreat featuring our own designer-extraordinaire, Shelly Pagliai. Shelly taught us how to construct the “Star Flower” block, gave us short-cuts to trimming half-square triangles, and showed us how she set the blocks on point.

Not to be out done, the Retreat Committee (Jo Conklin, Di Zook, and Bonnie Schultz) Retreat 3-2016 Committee.. Bonnie, Di, Jo kept us constantly laughing and having fun. Drawings every 15 minutes for prizes, snacks on the table, and a fantastic breakfast and lunch were just part of their plan. They also decorated the Annex with “Barn Blocks” that will be featured in the upcoming Hwy 36 Shop Challenge, starting in April.

A BIG thank you goes out to the committee and Shelly for a successful Spring Retreat!

Below are pictures taken throughout the day…
